Jakarta Media Crisis Center, in operation since Friday last week (17 July 2009), that provides latest development on the investigation of JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels bombings for national and foreign media, is moved back to the office of Public Relations Department of the Indonesian Police today (25 July 2009). Located in Bellagio Mall, Kuningan, the Jakarta Media Crisis Center, is officially closed down.

Before closing Jakarta Media Crisis Center, Governor of Jakarta Special Capital Region (DKI Jakarta) Fauzi Bowo said, ”Hopefully, in the future, we do not have to open Media Crisis Center for bombing tragedy and we expect our city not being held hostage by terrorists. Now we must complete our own tasks, the police will work in the Indonesian Police headquarter, while DKI Jakarta staff do the work in the office of provincial administration.”

When Governor Fauzi Bowo opened Jakarta Media Center in cooperation with Indonesian Police Chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri, he said, ”The purpose of the Media Crisis Center is to deal with information coming from the police and to prevent disinformation following the July 17 tragedy.” Governor also said that the Media Crisis Center is a place for all stakeholders including entrepreneurs and ministers to speak directly with local and foreign media.

”I can see at the media center, all Indonesians are united and talk with one voice, condemning the suicide bomber. Clerics in Jakarta, various religion leaders and the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sri Mulyani, all of them agree that Indonesia refuses be held hostage and refuses to be frightened by these criminals,” said Governor.

Furthermore, Governor said,”I want to say to the journalists, i apologize for any shortcomings. We open the media center as fast as we can on 17 July after the bombing and full-heartedly fulfill your information needs. We note inadequacies and learn from them.”

Today (24 July 2009), Jakarta Special Capital Region (DKI Jakarta) Governor Fauzi Bowo welcomes the fact that rupiah rate strengthened the whole day. “Another evidence that Indonesia’s economic condition is not affected by terrorists’ action.” Yesterday (23 July 2009), rupiah rate, referring to middle exchange rate of Bank Indonesia, passed Rp 10,000 and it was closed at Rp 9,995 against U.S. dollar.

Governor also said, ”It is undeniably that tourism industry will be affected by the bombing, but it will be temporary. I am confident that time needed for recovery will be not as long as that needed after the JW Marriot bomb blast in 2003. Right now, not only I feel, but also I see that there has been resilience and determination to not let the terrorists dictating our life.”

This morning (24 July 2009), at the Jakarta Media Crisis Center, Chairwoman of Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association Yanti Sukamdani said,” Bomb blasts at JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels decreased hotel’s occupancy rate. The occupancy rate is decreased by 54%.” Nevertheless Yanti Sukamdani is certain it will be improved by the end of 2009.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Ben Sukma explained the cancellation made by international tourists in several regions in Indonesia is about 5-30%. “In Jakarta, the cancellation reaches 30%” said Ben.

24 Juli 2009

Hari ini Gubernur Fauzi Bowo menyambut hangat berita terkini bahwa nilai tukar rupiah menguat dipasaran sepanjang hari, ”Ini satu lagi bukti nyata kalau ekonomi Indonesia tidak terpengaruh oleh aksi para terroris.” Nilai rupiah menurut kurs tengah Bank Indonesia kemarin menembus level Rp 10.000 per dollar AS dan ditutup pada Rp 9.995 per dollar AS.

Jakarta is Recovering Rapidly from the Bomb Attacks

Jakarta, Indonesia / Madrid, Spain, 23 July 2009

The tragic bomb attacks that took place on 17 July 2009 have undeniably shocked Jakarta and the entire country. However, the latest UNWTO mission, carried out by Xu Jing, Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific from 21-22 July 2009, indicates that the city is recovering rapidly from the sudden shock.

Apart from the specific areas where Hotel JW Marriot and Hotel Ritz Carlton are located, life has basically restored to its normality. “Jakarta did stop for a moment on Friday, but not for long. We are not going to allow terrorists to dictate and allow them to make Jakarta their hostage”. Fauzi Bowo, Governor of DKI Jakarta made the above comment on 21 July at the Jakarta Media Centre.

Latest data, obtained from Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism and confirmed by the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association, reveal that there is no obvious tourist exodus from Jakarta nor from Bali as a result of the bomb blast. The Government of Indonesia, right after the incident, took a number of immediate actions in order to minimize the negative impacts of the attacks. A Crisis Centre was immediately established in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to provide the tourism industry as well as the individual visitors with the comprehensive information and the latest updates of the situation. Jero Wacik, Minister of Culture and Tourism personally switched on the Ministry’s Emergency Response System and the Standard Operations Procedures (SOP), following the UNWTO’s guidelines for crisis in the tourism sector.

There is no room for terrorism to kill tourism. There is no room for terrorists to use tourism to kill innocent visitors, said Dr. Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General a.i. of UNWTO. Despite the temporary setbacks, Indonesia, as a world-famous tourist destination will continue its charm of cultural and natural diversity. In fact, Indonesia performed exceptionally well last year, achieving a 16.8 % increase of international tourist arrivals. From January to May 2009, tourist arrivals to Bali, Indonesia’s prime destination, were up by as high as 9.35 % when most destinations in the region were adversely affected by the financial and economic downturn. Time and again, Indonesia has manifested itself as an exemplary model to use tourism as an effective instrument not only to confront the short term economic difficulties but more importantly as a driving engine for job creation, trade and development.

At the press conference held on 22 July 2009 in Jakarta, Xu Jing, who was also taken to the site for inspection, congratulated the Government of Indonesia and the tourism industry of the country for their professional approach and efficient capacity in handling the crisis. The current difficulties are short in nature. As long as the industry rallies together to overcome the setbacks, the country will continue to build an even stronger tourism sector in the nearest future, as indicated by Taleb Rifai to Minister Wacik over the phone on 17 July, the very day of the attack.

22 July 2009

Governor of Jakarta Special Capital Region (DKI Jakarta) Fauzi Bowo said “For a moment after JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels bombings on Friday, activities in Jakarta stopped, but it was not for long. We will not allow terrorists to dictate our lives and hold Jakarta hostage.”

Signs showing recovery start to appear, including the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) on Friday that once decreased by 1.22% during the first session of the trading but in the second session it improved. Governor of DKI Jakarta Fauzi Bowo stated that the “IHSG increase is a concrete indication and it send a strong message that the market is still optimistic. This is a good indicator that Jakarta is back to normal.”

Governor Fauzi Bowo also announced that there has been no exodus of foreign citizens from the city and any other cities in Indonesia. “There are no significant changes in terms of arrivals and departures at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The numbers of passengers arriving and departing are equal.”

Data collected by the Office of Tourism and Culture of the Jakarta shows that four and five-star hotel occupancy rates not much changed after JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels bombings. Data collected from five-star hotels shows as of 19 July 2009 occupancy rate reaches 50.3% and as of 20 July 2009, it decreased slightly to 49.4%.

Office of Tourism and Culture of the Jakarta Province announces number of people visiting various shopping malls in conjunction with ”Jakarta Great Sale”, for example Grand Indonesia visitors, decreased by 50% when the bombings took place (17 July 2009). The situation does not last that long, the next day (18 July 2009), number of visitors increased to 80%. Number of visitors increased dramatically up to 90% on Sunday and Monday (19-20 July 2009).

Governor Fauzi Bowo said that he does not see any indications of any long-term impacts on the economy. He asserted, “There is a possibility that there will be turbulence in the tourism sector, but it is only temporary.”

At the Jakarta Media Crisis Center, yesterday (21 July 2009) Governor Fauzi Bowo said President of United States Barrack Obama will still come to Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Singapore and will visit Indonesia.

22 Juli 2009

21 July 2009

The Governor of Jakarta Special Capital Region (DKI Jakarta) Fauzi Bowo and Chairman of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) MS Hidayat hold a press conference at Jakarta Media Crisis Center on Tuesday (17 July 2009).

The Governor of Jakarta Special Capital Region (DKI Jakarta) Fauzi Bowo said “bomb blast can occur anywhere in the world, for example a bomb exploded in Mumbai, India last year and similar incident happened in London in the previous year. It is important for people of Jakarta to increase their vigilance level by applying community surveillance based on current procedure.”

“Jakarta will recover fast if the authority can reveal the bombing case promptly,” stated the Governor. Fauzi asked journalists to assist police investigation by publishing news according to official statement announced by Indonesian Police at the Media Crisis Center. Furthermore, the governor asked security officials in hotels, shopping malls and public places to check visitors’ laptops.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) MS Hidayat said ”The terror aimed at damaging the image of Indonesia. I hope Indonesian exports will not be affected by the bombing. However, domestic trading for several consumption commodities is affected. Airlines business is normal, but five-star hotel occupancy rate is slightly declined.”

MS Hidayat explained that KADIN Indonesia had contacted 10 foreign chamber of commerce organizations. He stressed, “It is not true that the bomb blasts were targeted to a group of investors.”

In a media conference attended by dozens of national and international journalists at the Media Crisis Center on Tuesday (21 July 2009), Hidayat explained ”The impact of bombings at the Mega Kuningan is insignificant for national economic condition. There is no major impact on real sector investments.”

Hidayat exclaimed, “If we manage security and political stability seriously, we will receive foreign investors’ trust.” He believes that economic condition will improve. “The occupancy rate of five-star hotels is slightly decline, because their guests move to local hotels,” he added.

Indonesian export value so far has declined due to global economic crisis. The export value in May 2009 reaches US$ 9.26 billion (9.52% increase) compared to April 2009. However, the export value is 28.28% lower than that in May 2008.

The value of accumulative export as of January-May 2009 reaches US$40.74 billion, a 29.24% decrease if it is compared to January-May 2008 export. Non-oil and gas export valued at US$35.05 billion or decreased by 21.19% compared to the export in a similar period in the previous year.

Hidayat emphasized, “Whether the blast made major or minor impact, for sure Indonesia’s credibility has been damaged. Credibility can be restored as far as how government and law enforcer handle the bomb blasts.”

The reaction to Jakarta bomb blasts is not as negative as the reaction that appeared after the Bali bombing and bombing occurred in front of Australian Embassy. The impact of the recent bombings on trading in the stock exchange and on currency is less significant.

It was reported from the Indonesia Stock Exchange on Tuesday (22 July 2009), that a massive stock buying was triggered by positive sentiment on global market index. This massive buying improves share price index to its highest level for the past 10 months.

Composite stock price index (IHSG) increased by 40.2 point or 1.91% up to 2146 level. The LQ-45 index increased by 7.73 point or 1.88 percent up to the level 419.43 and Kompas 100 increased by 9.06 point or 1.76% up to the level 522.68. They are the highest since September 2008.

Today’s market trading is attractive, the stock volume which has been traded is 5.11 billion or around Rp 5.425 trillion. This value is considered attractive compared to the average value of transaction in Indonesia Stock Exchange for the past month, which was around Rp 3.5 trillion.

21 Juli 2009

Nilai ekspor kumulatif Januari-Mei 2009 mencapai 40,74 miliar dollar AS, turun 29,24 persen dibandingkan dengan ekspor Januari-Mei 2008.

Hidayat menegaskan, ledakan bom dipastikan membuat iklim investasi terguncang. ”Entah sedikit ataupun banyak dampaknya, kredibilitas Indonesia mengalami kemunduran.
