Leaders & High Officials Comments Regarding the Jakarta Blast

20 July 2009

What leaders and high officials from around the world have said about the bombing at the J.W Marriott and Ritz Carlton Hotel:

President Obama said of the bombing that "I strongly condemn the attacks that occurred... in Jakarta and extend my deepest condolences to all of the victims and their loved ones”[1]. Obama continued to say that he expressed "support for and solidarity with his government and the people of Indonesia" and offered U.S. government backing for the "ongoing Indonesian investigation[2]."

President Obama also said that Americans "stand by the Indonesian people in this difficult time, and the U.S. government stands ready to help the Indonesian government respond to and recover from these outrageous attacks as a friend and partner[3]."

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has also condemned the terrorist attack saying that “Any terrorist attack any where is an attack on all of us. Any terrorist attack in Indonesian is an attack on our neighbor”. Mr. Rudd went on to say that “Any terrorist is act of cowardice. It is an act of murder, it is a barbaric act that violets the fundamental principals of human decency[4]”.

While visiting the site of the bombing in Jakarta on the 19th July, Australia Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Chris Evans while in Jakarta said that "Indonesian authorities have made great strides in recent years, they have been quite successful in countering Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), but this was, obviously, a very tragic incident." Mr Evans said that "It reminds us all that the fight against terrorism is going to be a long one, and we have to continue to renew our efforts into what is a dreadful situation, where people are prepared to kill and maim people and give up their own lives in this senseless terrorism[5]."
